Disney has released figures to celebrate more than 20 years of The Lion King, confirming that it's the top-earning stage title in box-office history with $9.1 Billion (yes it's a billion). Add the film to the total , and it reaches $11.6 billion. This is the highest ever figure for both an on-screen and stage version. The film was released on October 28, the 20th anniversary of the Lion King's debut in London's West End. However, this number does not include the earnings from the original films. Additionally, there are ancillary earnings such as television shows, merchandise and video games DVD, VHS, Blu-Ray and album soundtrack sales. Two years ago, the House of Mouse picked Julie Taymor as the director to adapt the tale. While she was then best known for her work as a director of Shakespeare and the plays she directed, Taymor also created stunning staging and costume. The audience of the London anniversary gala last week (in aid of the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the Royal Academy of Music) was captivated by the timeless tale of the progress of Simba from wide-eyed cub to his destiny as the King of the Pridelands on the Serengeti Plains.
