Truck stops are big business. Just look at Tom and Judy Love and their multi-billion dollar fortune. Their truck stop chain Pilot Flying J (the Haslam family from Tennessee) has made them billionaires. Warren Buffet is also one of the major factors in their success. The Pilot Corporation was founded by Jim Haslam, the father of former Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam. Jim Haslam was a star football player at the University of Tennessee. In 1948, he enrolled at UT. The Volunteers took home the national championship of 1951. He was a part of Sigma Chi fraternity, and was a starter on O-line. He also finished second in the polls for the Heisman Trophy in his junior season. He joined the Army after graduating from college, and was stationed in Korea in the time immediately after the Korean War. When he returned to Tennessee after the war, he landed the job of Fleet Oil. After one year his promotion, he became the head the new Sail Oil chain. Haslam left Sail in 1958 and began his own business.
