 Set during the last days of the Ottoman Empire, The Promise is a love story that follows Michael who is a talented medical student, beautiful and sophisticated Ana, and Chris - a renowned American journalist who is based in Paris.The film tells the story of Michael (Oscar Isaac) an 18-year-old Armenian who hopes to study medical school. Michael travels to Constantinople for study and meets Ana (Charlotte Le Bon), an Armenian woman who falls in love with him. But, Chris Bale, an American photographer who is sent to Turkey to document the first genocide in the 20th century when the Turks killed Armenia's minorities, is also in the film. A love triangle is entangled in the terrible events of war.I decided to see this film partly due to the fact that am a historian and partly due to the great acting talent of the leading actors. It was clear that the director of the film is not worthy of their acting talents. At times it was almost painful to observe how difficult it was for them to inject any authenticity or life to their characters. It's difficult to emotionally connect with characters who don't appear real.
