Jewel Kilcher, born May 23, 1974, is an American performer, songwriter and actress. She has earned four Grammy Award nominations and, in 2021, she has sold over 30 million albums worldwide.Jewel was raised near Homer, Alaska, where she was a child of the streets singing and yodeling as a duo with her father, a local musician. When she was 15 she was awarded a part-time scholarship to the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, where she studied operatic voice. After graduation, she began writing songs and performing in bars and cafes in San Diego, California. In response to local media attention, she was offered a recording contract with Atlantic Records, which released her debut album, Pieces of You, in 1995; it was later to become one of the most successful debut albums of all time, going 12 times platinum. The first single from the album, "Who Will Save Your Soul" was a chart-topper at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100; two others, "You Were Meant for Me" and "Foolish Games" made it to second place on the Hot 100, and were featured on Billboard's 1997 year-end singles chart, as well as Billboard's 1998 year-end singles chart. Her second album, Spirit, was released in 1998, followed by This Way (2001). The album was released in 2003. This album was a departure from her folk-oriented recordings and featured electronic arrangements and elements that were dance-pop.
